A story of an old man who reflects on his life and shares what he has learned along the way. Continue to think differently...
Who We Were
"Where did the time go?" - An old man prepares to tell a speech that reflects on what he has learned in life through his pains and experiences.
"We look back and see through to the other side of what we once knew" - He thinks back to his youth and thinks about what he knows now versus what he knew then.
"Ourselves." - This is who he was, how people were back then.
"History repeating itself undoubtedly so." - He believes history can always repeat itself.
"Without remorse or sanctity, we march forward undeserving, unknowing, of what’s to come." - Sometimes before the worst things happen in life, we never see it coming.
"For who are we to trust in this world if not ourselves to become what we once thought was possible." - He defends himself by saying he only had himself to trust to accomplish his past dreams and aspirations, so why would he ever be so cautious and hesitant as to continue forward in life thinking about the bad times to come.
"We hold ourselves, dear, our friends far, and our enemies closest." - He realizes his mistake of thinking too highly of himself, being too prideful, and never letting his friends get close to him, but letting his enemies affect his emotions more than his friends.
"For what do we have to lose if not our pride and dignity." - He proclaims that in trying to hold all his pride and dignity to himself, he lost it all.
"We show others ourselves for what we wish, and show ourselves the mirror for what we regret." - Ignorance is bliss, but at the end of the day when we look in the mirror, often times he saw someone with many regrets.
"Forth to into the night we wait in bed and see the stars of wishes in tar." - After looking in the mirror, he would go to bed, and look out through the window at the night sky and wonder if his dreams were attainable or if they were even really possible.
"Feathered with consciousness, buried by fortitude, we endlessly seek what not is ours, and ours is not." - His consciousness would distract him from his true emotions, and his resilience would keep him from realizing he had pain within him.
"What do we have to lose, but ours are not." - He realized he had nothing left to lose but had to become stronger and better.
"We cannot stand where one man stands, but if we could we might fall over. For what he has experienced is unknown to us." - He realizes he has to forge his own path because others' lives are not for him to live.
"We stand in the shadow of such men wanting and wishing to be but one step ahead." - He realizes that before, he was wishing to be where others were in life, but realized that they were always going to be one step ahead because they were living their own life.
"Underneath the privilege to grow once old, we desire a life without pain but yet we crumble." - He tells everyone that many people are given the privilege to accomplish a lot in life, but they are afraid of pain, and being afraid of pain and avoiding it will hurt them even more than the pain itself.
"Left to our thoughts we tire, forbidden from activity, we lose hope." - It is critical to avoid this unrelenting cycle because we could lose hope, and once we lose hope and are too old to do anything about it, we have nothing.
"Understand this is not what we want, but what we get." - Life is what you make of it.
"For what we get is not ourselves, but what is not?" - So if you think you are not living your life, whose life are you living?
